Favorite places to shop: The most underrated thrift or flee market
Sitting behind him in Management class, Kayce looks like the average student, but as the semester went on, I eventually discovered his cool, eclectic style and knew that I had to feature him in Dress Code Blog. Talking to him after class I learned that his favorite places to shop are most likely not yours, and his crazy combinations never repeat—his friend in class even suggested that we picture Kayce’s outfits every day!
On this day in particular, there were three aspects of Kayce’s outfit that we couldn’t get enough of. The first is his mixture of causal with tailored. Bright red plaid and a fitted navy blazer say it all. Secondly, adding his military green and brown bag and boots give his outfit that eclectic look we’ve been talking about. Lastly his accents of gold accessories make him look like he has a Midas touch.
Kayce may have just mixed a blazer, plaid shirt and jeans together; but when he cuffed the jeans, threw on the gold rose pin and gold watch, it turned his outfit into the epitome of original.
His childhood friend, Rickie, even confirmed his daring style. “He’s famous, he’s well known. He’s well respected on campus, and the way you see him dressed here is the way he wakes up and dresses every day…even to the gym!”
Well, you didn’t just hear it from us bloggers! And today we learned that it doesn’t matter what styles you pair, as long as you know how to put it all together.

Occupation: Future successful artist and graphic designer
One word to describe yourself: Quirky
Style inspiration: Slouchy chic, retro, 60s pinup, mod, boy’s clothes
Favorite places to shop: Thrift stores like Savers, Urban Outfitters, J. Crew, American Apparel
Call it bias, favoritism, preferential treatment, whatever, my awesome roommate’s got style. Kim is her name, and effortless chic is her game. With a laid back but straight from the runway look, this week’s fashionista makes catwalk looks cool and comfortable. On a breezy Long Beach afternoon Kim muses, “I like old stuff and easy to put together pieces; I don’t like wasting time stressing about what to wear.”
Drawing inspiration from menswear, this future graphic designer extraordinaire strides across campus in the perfect outfit pick-me-up: oxfords. This timeless take on footwear is a quick and stylish way to make any outfit instantly put together. Adding her own personal flair, Kim perfectly pairs the oxfords with a more feminine schoolgirl piece - black knee-high socks. Layering a comfy cardigan over a flattering black v-neck tee, Kim keeps her minimal aesthetic fresh with a vintage inspired necklace and chocolate brown Ray Bans. We thought this look was the perfect transitional spring outfit, one from which all of us can find inspiration and pieces from in our very own closet.
Day after day this Bay Area bred artist and collector of “pretty things” (check out Kim’s Tumblr, shiny pretty things, here) is spot on with her marriage of comfortable and fashionable. Next time you spot those luscious long locks around the halls of CSULB, be sure to give her some props for never forgetting her fashion A game.

Just because it is Spring Break doesn’t mean Dress Code Blog takes a vacation! And it just so happens that while I was on a business trip in New Orleans, Louisiana with some fellow CSULB students I found the perfect 49er to feature in our Spring Break edition! Eric’s style was so Los Angeles hipster, NOLA couldn’t handle it.
Eric’s saffron yellow Emerica shoes were a statement maker and became his trademark piece on the trip. And they went well with everything! On day one Eric wore them with a GAP denim jacket and twill lounge pants to be casual and comfortable on the plane ride in. Another day I caught Eric wearing the sneakers with a sleek trench that he tied in the back, a grey sweater and second-hand store tailored pants. Our last day we spent exploring the city, and Eric was seen in them with a baseball tee, newsboy hat, and double-cuffed dark jeans.
Our favorite thing about his look is the way he styles out his outfits. Tucking in his sweaters, throwing on some Ray Bans, or adding a belt for flair, Eric says that he does it all for comfort (which is definitely believable with the amount of walking we did on the trip.)
And since we couldn’t decide which look of Eric’s we admired best, we have a few favorites featured. What we really want to know is how he fit it all into a carry-on!

Oh, and by the way, we are totally digging his cherry red oversized headphones he wore on day one :)

Favorite place to shop: 4th St.
Spotted outside the library spending some quality time with girlfriend Nicole (roulettedare.tumblr.com), this featured fashionisto had us doing double takes with his confident, dapper look. While most guys on campus take the easy way out throwing on whatever stale sweatshirt and basketball shorts are in nearest reach, Amber and I were instantly impressed by Zameer’s updated take on the classic men’s jacket and tie style.
As an avid shopper of 4th Street, Zameer owes his navy pinstripe blazer to a thrifting adventure. By then layering the blazer with a grey American Apparel cardigan, he keeps warm and incorporates the old with the new. Zameer’s skinny gold tie shines as brightly as his winning smile, and adds a bright pop of color. And lastly we can’t forget the accessories. This cool cat’s perfectly worn leather brogues look right out of his style icon The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’ closet. Zameer also takes a plain canvas messenger bag and makes it his own with a plethora of colorful pins and buttons.
Let this week’s fashionisto be a lesson to all you male readers out there: ditch the baggy sweatshirt and you’re sure to turn heads in admiration… maybe even that cute girl in your math class.

Class standing: Junior
Occupation: Student/Dance Instructor
One word to describe yourself: Free
Style inspiration: Colbie Caillat
Favorite places to shop: Thrift stores/Flea Markets
In our opinion, living on a college student budget shouldn’t be the only reason to thrift shop- especially if you find cute little numbers like Kylan’s chunky sweater, pictured above. As our favorite part of her outfit, this comfy cardi-vest is a popular look for this transition weather we are having in our coastal So Cal city. More fashionable than functional, her sweater pulls together what we call the “winter beachy” look.
She brings out a new way to layer with the longer tab sleeves of her shirt, and adds a pop of color to her grayscale color palette with the textured green fabric. Fun and relaxed, she pulls it all together with cuffed, gray-washed skinny jeans and black beaded sandals.
So, dressing for class with this unpredictable costal weather can still be easy if you look to vintage stores for unique items to layer, and tie them together with your staple pieces. Now Kylan, please take us shopping!

Reppin’ Altamont brand clothing from where he currently works, Jeff looks styled in a cool jacket, a crisp pair of khakis and a baseball cap. The jacket is a fun combination of textures, mixing a cotton denim and sweatshirt material. A favorite part of Jeff’s outfit would have to be his shoes. Cream in color and corduroy material, Jeff’s loafers are the finishing touch to look classic, charismatic, and comfortable.

These twin fashionistas may have the same birthday, but their personal styles are worlds apart. Tomomi mused that she usually goes for a sleek black look, contrasting with her sister Satomi who’s usually shining in technicolor. We caught them on a rare day of role reversal, but just had to capture this sister duo’s eclectic Harajuku inspired style. From Satomi’s hazelnut blazer to Tomomi’s neon watch and tights, these girls play it cool while keeping warm and bring a new twist to old classics.

Name: Andrea
Age: 20
Major: Pre-Nursing
Class standing: Junior
Occupation: Student
Style inspiration: Kate Bosworth
Favorite places to shop: Urban Outfitters
Andrea instantly caught our eye with her creative pairing of a bold blue skirt and leopard print top. This 20-year-old fashionista’s outfit also perfectly combines feminine, with the scalloped edge skirt, and masculine, with the brown combat boots. Totally on trend this season, pairing masculine with feminine gives any outfit a unique edge and appeal. Andrea tops off her mix-and-match look with a stylish leather cross-body bag, and just like that we’re sold.
Now class, what did we learn from Andrea today? Be brave, be bold, and go where your average 49er has never gone before.

Susan, darling, as if we didn’t love the bright shade of plum you’re wearing enough, you to top it off with everyone’s favorite military boots and classic black leggings. What really caught our eye was her single-button cardigan she was flaunting on campus waiting for class to start. When asked where she got her sweater, Susan stated that she took it from her grandma and cut it up! Details down the front of the sweater and the cuffs of her sleeves were her very own creation.
Susan said she couldn’t think of a word to describe her, but we would definitely use “innovative.”

Name: Preston
Age: 18
Major: Film
Class standing: Freshman
Occupation: Extra Logistics IT
One word to describe yourself: Confused.
Style inspiration: The world.
Favorite places to shop: What I get for free.
Not afraid of making the old new again, Preston rocks a Grandpa cardigan handed down from a friend of his Dad’s. Completing the old school look is this Film major’s gold framed glasses and newsboy cap, a refreshing change from your everyday baseball hat. Taking what started as a simple black t-shirt and red pants and pairing them with some unique nostalgia inspired pieces, our first male Dress Code-r embraces an effortlessly cool look.
No vintage fan in Long Beach has gone without the occasional quest to Buffalo Exchange, which poor Preston got a major rejection from when he tried selling a trash bag full of his old clothes. Take it from us though - it was definitely Buffalo’s loss.
